At Ronald McDonald House New England, we believe that when a child is sick, the entire family needs care. Our mission is to provide a “home-away-from-home” that provides not just a room or a comfortable bed, but also a supportive community, warm meals, and the peace of mind that comes from being just steps away from a child’s bedside.
“It took years of being dismissed by countless doctors,” they shared. “We knew something wasn’t right.“
Finally, they found a doctor who listened. Their daughter was diagnosed with tethered cord syndrome. A neurological disorder caused by tissue attachments that limit the spinal cord’s movement within the spinal column. They were relieved to have answers and a surgery was scheduled, but a new worry quickly followed: where would they stay? After everything they had been through, even trust felt fragile.
“After being dismissed so many times, we were fearful of trying to trust strangers,” they said. Then, they arrived at the Ronald McDonald House. “We were welcomed by a heartwarming couple who made us feel like family.” In that moment, something shifted.
The room they were given was “cleaner than any hotel we have ever stayed in.” A shuttle would take them to the hospital early the next morning. And waiting in the room was a small surprise for their daughter. “They even left a gift in the room for my daughter. Her eyes lit up when she saw it.” In the middle of fear, there was a moment of joy. And in a time filled with uncertainty, there was relief.
“Being able to stay for free in a warm place that is located right near the hospital made our experience so much easier.”
